Masoor Dal (Garlic Flavored Red Lentil)

Masoor dal is simply, quick, healthy, light and a comfort food. this is very good on the tummy especially if you have been ill and returning to normal food or if you want a light meal.For Bengalis, specially make this dal with roti and rice. Today I would like to share a recipe which is my mom's invetion. This is an one of a kind recipe which I never heard of anyone making or never ate anywhere. it is cooked in a very simple but special way. It tastes so good.



Ingredients :

Masoor dal (red lentil) ~ 1 cup
Garlic ~ 4 cloves, grated
Onion ~ 1, big, sliced
Turmeric powder ~ 1 tsp
Black cumin seeds ~ 1/2 tsp
Dry red chilli ~ 1
Sugar ~ 1/2 tsp
Salt to taste
Oil ~ 1 tsp


Method :

Wash the red lentils. Place in a pressure cooker with one and a quarter cup of water. Stir in the turmeric. Pressure cook the lentils on medium heat for two whistles.

Remove from heat, let the pressure drop completely, then remove the weight and cover. Add another half cup of water to the lentil and salt to taste. Cook on a low heat for 5-7 mins.

Prepare the tempering by heating the ghee in a small saucepan. Add dry red chilli, black cumin seeds when it crackles thed add sliced onion, fry until golden brown.Then add grated garlic, fry for 1 min.

Finally add the cooked dal, sugar and salt, let it simmer for another 4-5 mins.

Serve warm with rice or chapati.
